Briar Cliff University students gathered on Sunday, February 1, for a 3v3 intramural basketball tournament that brought competition, energy, and campus connection to the court. Chargers from different sports, majors and class years participated, creating an environment centered on friendly rivalry, school spirit and community involvement.
The tournament featured multiple teams competing in fast-paced games, with players' showcasing skills, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon. The 3v3 format kept the action constant, encouraging quick decision-making and collaboration on both ends of the court. Designed as a recreational event, the tournament gave students an opportunity to stay active while engaging with peers they may not typically interact with during the academic week.
Several games were closely contested, with teams battling for rebounds, loose balls, and scoring opportunities. Teammates and spectators lined up the sidelines, cheering on fellow Chargers and contributing to an energetic atmosphere inside the gym. The event reflected Briar Cliff’s emphasis on creating opportunities for students to remain involved and connected outside of the classroom.
Ashley Pawlowski, who organized and ran the event, emphasized the importance of intramural activities in building campus culture. Through her role, she expressed that events like the 3v3 tournament create opportunities for students across campus to come together, break out of their usual social circles and simply enjoy playing the game. She noted that seeing students who may not normally interact form teams, compete, and have fun together is one of the most rewarding aspects of organizing intramural events.
Among the participants was Diego Alferez, a Briar Cliff student and member of the men’s soccer team, who enjoyed the chance to return to the basketball court. “As someone who used to play basketball in high school, I love these types of events because it allows me to hoop again and have fun with teammates,” Alferez said.
The tournament highlighted the inclusive nature of intramural sports, welcoming both student-athletes and non-athletes alike. For many students, the event served as a stress reliever and a way to stay connected during the semester, while also reigniting a love for the game in a relaxed and supportive setting.
Looking ahead, Pawlowski shared that intramural programming at Briar Cliff continues to expand, with plans already in motion for a 5v5 basketball tournament in the near future. The success of the 3v3 event reflects the growing interest in recreational sports and their role in strengthening the Charger community.
As students left the gym tired but smiling, the 3v3 intramural basketball tournament proved that sometimes the best moments on campus happen when competition, school spirit and community meet at center court.
