After five years without a cheer and dance program, Briar Cliff University is bringing its spirit back to campus. The cheer and dance teams, which last competed in 2019, are officially making their return this year with new leadership, fresh energy, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Head Coach Madison Mahr and Team Ambassador Kelsie Colfack have been the main lead of the program’s relaunch. For Colfack, who also serves as the university’s head athletic trainer, seeing the team return has been both exciting and meaningful.
“It’s a good opportunity for Briar Cliff to expand and reach a different population of students,” said Colfack. “Having the dance team back not only adds spirit to athletic events but also opens doors for students who have backgrounds in performance and want to keep dancing in college.”
As both a trainer and ambassador, Colfack’s role is more than just injury care. She helps the dancers physically and emotionally, offering encouragement, treats, and personal support throughout the season.
The athletic department has also stepped in to help the relaunch succeed. Colfack credited the administration and donor scholarships for providing the financial backing and resources necessary to bring the team to life again.
The coaching staff is filled with excitement about the program’s comeback. “It’s been a lot of reestablishing and everything is new,” said Mahr. “It’s an exciting challenge and a great job opportunity. I’ve been a part of championship teams before, but this is different because we’re starting from zero.”
That process has involved everything from designing uniforms to attending recruitment events across the country. “We started the team in October last year,” said Mahr. “We went to places like Omaha, Nashville, and Orlando. We even recruited one dancer from Alaska. It’s been about finding students who not only have skill, but passion.”
The team is currently focused on performing at football games and preparing for future competitions. “Right now, we’re balancing school spirit with performance,” said Mahr. “We have different halftime routines for each game, and after football season, we’ll shift to basketball performances and possibly state dance competitions.”
Looking ahead, both Colfack and Mahr see this as the beginning of something lasting. “We want to grow the program’s size and bring more energy to Briar Cliff’s athletic atmosphere,” Colfack said. “It’s exciting for the whole community.”
The staff’s most rewarding part of the experience has been witnessing the team come together, explaining that their dedication, talent, and drive have exceeded her expectations. “I believe this group has laid the groundwork for the future of the program, serving as the foundation for something that will continue to grow and inspire the Briar Cliff community for years to come,” said Mahr.
