Intramural sports are taking over Briar Cliff University

Intramural sports continue to take over the college scene with Briar Cliff University now getting involved.

Intramural sports are put on by a university providing fun and competitive matches between two teams in various sports like basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, etc. These intramural leagues are put on as a fun way for those on campus to play sports with fellow students against fellow students.

Briar Cliff is relatively new to intramural sports as they have only been implemented within the past few years. These leagues are run by Ashley Pawlowski, the head of Residence Life.

“The goal of intramural sports is that all students get the chance to compete in a fun physical activity,” Pawlowski said. “I hope that these sports can provide a fun activity for students and to meet new people.”

Pawlowski hopes to make intramural sports bigger across campus. “Intramural sports do have a history at BCU and it’s something that I am working on to bring more consistently to campus,” she said.

The students that take part in these intramural sports don’t do it just to win. They participate to have fun and meet others; the winning comes after. Carter Schorg, a sophomore baseball player, took part in the 3v3 basketball tournament that took place November 19, right before students left for Thanksgiving break. Even though Schorg did end up winning the tournament with his two other teammates, that wasn’t all he cared about. Sometimes students like to revisit sports that they’d played growing up and want to be involved in again.

“The main reason I chose to play was to have fun with my friends,” Schorg said.  “It did feel good to go back into my past and play basketball somewhat competitively again,” Schorg said.

Just as much as these intramural sports are held for fun and competition, they are also held for the experience.

“I played in the sand volleyball tournament, and it was my first time ever trying it,” said Justin Remar, a junior baseball player. “I didn’t even plan on playing in the tournament. Saying yes turned out to be a great decision as it was some of the most fun, I’ve had in a long time. I didn’t care about winning, I cared about being with my friends and having fun.”

There are high hopes for the future of intramural sports as more and more people continue to sign up as more events are put on. There are hopes to have more events including kickball and pickleball.
