The rivalry between Briar Cliff and Morningside once again delivered a competitive weekend, as the Chargers dropped three of four games in a four-game series. Despite the result, Briar Cliff showed flashes of dominance and left the weekend with a clear understanding of what needs to improve moving forward.

Morningside took the first two games of the series by scores of 3-1 and 4-1, putting Briar Cliff in an early hole. In both contests, the Chargers struggled to generate offense, combining for just two runs. That lack of production proved costly, especially in tight games where a few key hits could have changed the outcome.

The Chargers responded in game three with a statement performance, shutting out Morningside 7-0. The win showcased Briar Cliff’s potential, as strong pitching and timely hitting came together in a complete performance. However, Morningside answered in the final game, securing the series with a 7-5 victory.

For Briar Cliff player Kaden Allred, the intensity of the rivalry was something that built as the weekend progressed.

“Going into the week, it was just like another week of baseball,” Allred said. “But on Friday, everyone was amped up to go play Morningside. Then Saturday, the atmosphere completely changed.”

That shift in energy was evident throughout the series, especially as both teams fed off the rivalry atmosphere. While the final record may not reflect it, Allred believes the Chargers were capable of a different outcome.

“We could’ve won all four games,” Allred said. “You can’t win baseball games when you score two runs in two games.”

Despite the early struggles, Briar Cliff showed resilience and confidence, particularly in their dominant win on Sunday.

“Sunday, that first game, we killed them,” Allred said, referring to the Chargers’ 7-0 victory.

The shutout win highlighted what the Chargers are capable of when everything clicks, but consistency remains the key focus moving forward. The ability to produce offensively across all four games will be crucial if Briar Cliff hopes to turn close losses into wins.

Even in defeat, the Chargers demonstrated they can compete with one of their biggest rivals. The experience gained from the series provides valuable lessons as the season continues, especially in high-pressure situations.

With the rivalry bringing out a heightened level of intensity, Briar Cliff will look to build on its strong moments and find more consistency. If the Chargers can combine their offensive potential with solid pitching performances, they have the pieces to bounce back and compete at a high level moving forward.
